GAVI Alliance Board Chair Dagfinn Høybråten thanks Atlético Madrid and player Radamel Falcao for their leadership in reducing child mortality and commitment to GAVI’s mission. Through the Atletico Madrid Foundation, the Spanish soccer club is collaborating with “la Caixa”’s Business Alliance for Child Vaccination to promote the involvement of Spanish companies in the cause of immunisation.

All funds Atlético Madrid contributes and raises from football fans and the general public for the Business Alliance are matched through by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation through the GAVI Matching Fund. “la Caixa” itself has donated €4 million (US$ 5.3 million) through the fund to buy pneumococcal vaccines for GAVI-supported countries in Latin America. And overall, “la Caixa” Foundation has contributed €14 million (US$ 18.5 million) to GAVI, including from “la Caixa” employees, making it GAVI’s largest corporate donor.

Atlético Madrid star striker Radamel Falcao also lends his voice to the cause of childhood immunisation by serving as a Business Alliance representative.
