Dr Hope Johnson is Director of Measurement, Evaluation & Learning of Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, where she is responsible for overseeing the monitoring and evaluation of Gavi’s strategy, programmes, policies and priority initiatives; and management of Gavi investments in immunisation data strengthening and research.
An infectious disease epidemiologist with 25 years’ experience in public health, including 18 in vaccines and immunisation from country to global levels, Hope’s previous work includes epidemiologic research; and building the evidence base and capacity for data-driven decision-making to accelerate development and implementation of maternal and child health interventions, with a specific focus on vaccine preventable diseases. Before joining Gavi in 2012, Hope worked for five years in support of its mission while at the International Vaccine Access Center (IVAC) on the Gavi-funded Pneumococcal Accelerated Development and Introduction Plan (PneumoADIP).
Hope has served as a faculty member and instructor at the Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health, of which she is a graduate with PhD and Master of Public Health degrees in Global Disease Epidemiology and Control, and specialisation in vaccine sciences and policy. While working in academia for ten years, Hope conducted surveillance and investigational drug and device clinical trials; and she published systematic reviews, evidence syntheses, disease burden and economic modeling studies informing policy and strategy development.
Prior to this, Hope held several roles as a researcher, and working to strengthen countries’ local epidemiology and national health information systems, including with the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO).
