Geneva, 18 July 2013 – The UK Department for International Development (DFID) today confirmed that the GAVI Alliance remains a highly effective organisation that is making progress on areas for improvement highlighted by the UK.
DFID’s Multilateral Aid Review (MAR) update follows the 2011 MAR which found GAVI to be “very good value for money for UK aid”. The MAR update enables the UK Government to assess international organisations on progress made against the reforms proposed in the 2011 MAR.
Progress made in all areas for reform “demonstrates GAVI’s on-going commitment to improvement," DFID said. The MAR update also found that GAVI provides “highly cost-effective health interventions” and has “effective financial oversight” of its programmes.
Following the publication of the MAR GAVI update Dr Seth Berkley, CEO of the GAVI Alliance, said:
“I am pleased that the UK Government continues to recognise the GAVI Alliance as a high-performing organisation that is delivering results and making a significant contribution towards improving the health of children across the world.
“Through the support of our donors, including the UK Government, we are focused on our mission to vaccinate children, no matter where they live. This year alone GAVI will fund 600 million vaccine doses for children living in the most challenging circumstances.
“The UK cites the GAVI model as an example of strong partnerships. Our work with governments civil society and the private sector, as well as the World Health Organization and UNICEF, enables us to draw on the skills and experience of all Alliance partners to help us achieve our goal of immunising an additional quarter of a billion children by 2015.
“GAVI is making progress in all five areas highlighted in the MAR 2011 and we will continue to use the recommendations to help us to improve and reach more children with lifesaving vaccines.
“The MAR is an important tool, along with similar reviews by other bilateral assessments and by Multinational Organization Performance Assessment Network (MOPAN), to help us to identify areas where we can improve and to prioritise our reforms.”
