Dar es Salaam, 06 December 2012 - The GAVI Alliance welcomes Germany’s continued support for immunisation. "We are very grateful to Germany for its commitment,” said GAVI Deputy CEO, Helen Evans. "GAVI is an Alliance that draws its strengths from the engagement of its partners. Predictable funding is key to reducing child mortality and protecting coming generations. We look forward to further strengthening our partnership with Germany."
Germany’s support for GAVI began in 2006. Since 2010 Germany has continually increased its contributions from €4 million to €30 million in 2012.
"I am glad to be here today to attend the signing ceremony of a financing agreement of €20 million between the Government of Tanzania, GAVI Alliance and the German development bank KfW Entwicklungsbank,” said Dr Klaus Müller, Director of KfW.
“Let me extend my sincere thanks on behalf of the government of Tanzania to our partner GAVI for the support that they have been giving to Tanzania since 2001,” said Hon Dr William A Mgimwa, Minister of Finance for Tanzania representing the Tanzanian Ministry of Health. “The Government of Tanzania will continue co-financing GAVI programmes in collaboration with other Development Partners.”
At the GAVI Alliance Partners’ Forum currently being held in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, GAVI’s Deputy CEO Helen Evans chaired a signature ceremony of the agreement for continued support for the Expanded Programme of Immunisation (EPI) in Tanzania for 2012. This involved representatives headed by Ursula Müller, Director-General of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) on behalf of the German Government.
At this event, partners emphasised the joint success that had been achieved. Since it began, in 2011, this partnership has enabled Germany to support child immunisation in Tanzania through pentavalent vaccinations, which protect children from five deadly diseases.
The meeting culminated in the ceremonial signing of the agreement, which will see Germany covering a sizeable share of the 2013 and 2014 GAVI immunisation programme in Tanzania. This will contribute significantly to the success of the dual vaccine launch taking place in Dar es Salaam on the same day. The programme is co-financed by the Tanzanian government, with additional funds coming from other GAVI donors.
Speaking at a panel on "Sustainable Financing: Co-financing and Sustainability” at the GAVI Alliance Partners’ Forum, Ursula Müller, Director-General of BMZ, noted that “GAVI very much defines the state of the art in health partnerships and development cooperation, so just keep going!“.
