Geneva, 26 May 2009 - The GAVI Alliance has appointed Australian development expert Helen Evans as its first Deputy Chief Executive Officer.

Both GAVI and the Global Fund are leading the way and I feel extremely privileged and humbled to have been a part of the Global Fund and now to move to the GAVI Alliance. Helen Evans, GAVI's new Deputy CEO |
"I am delighted we're able to attract such a well-respected professional," said GAVI's CEO Dr Julian Lob-Levyt.
"Helen's extensive experience and strong management skills will strengthen our operations and further the ties between GAVI and the Global Fund."
In this newly-created role, Ms. Evans will oversee the performance and management of the Alliance secretariat as it strives to expand immunisation to developing countries with the new introduction of support for pneumococcal and rotavirus vaccines.
Ms. Evans brings more than 30 years of management experience in health and social policy as well as a proven track record in leadership. In the early 1990s, she managed the National Communicable Diseases Programme and the international health responsibilities at the health ministry in Australia. She also represented the Australian Government at international health forums including the first UNAIDS board.
"Few people are fortunate enough to be part of pioneering a new model of development that combines innovation with a pragmatic focus on delivering results that can be clearly shown to save millions of lives. Both GAVI and the Global Fund are leading the way and I feel extremely privileged and humbled to have been a part of the Global Fund and now to move to the GAVI Alliance," Ms. Evans said.
