"Immunisation has been the greatest public health success story in Bangladesh," says Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Wazed. Take a look back at some of the ways in which, with Gavi support, Bangladesh has managed to immunise 38 million children since 2003.

  • A healthcare worker in Bangladesh educates parents from a rural area about the importance of immunisation. A critical part of the success of immunisation campaigns is generating demand – engaging with communities to ensure parents trust the safety and efficacy of vaccines and are motivated to make sure their children complete recommended immunisation schedules on time.
  • Women in Char Doglas Island, Sirajganj, Bangladesh, carry their children to get vaccinated. Most inhabitants of “chars”, the remote floodplain sediment islands that dot the Ganges delta, live a hand to mouth existence. Women often give birth at home and lack extensive formal education. However, thanks to successful vaccination campaigns these mothers are aware of the importance of immunisation and often travel long distances to get their children to the nearest vaccination center.
  • Mahmun and Moon bring their son Sahrish to the Dhaka Expanded Program of Immunization (EPI) Center to receive the pneumococcal (PCV) and inactivated polio (IPV) vaccines, during the launch of the national PCV/IPV campaign. For many children like Sahrish, vaccination serves as an initial entry point into the health system, making them more likely to receive additional recommended vaccines and further primary health care in the future.

  • Healthcare workers get ready to deliver the typhoid conjugate vaccine (TCV) during a 2018 clinical trial in Bangladesh. A significant portion of typhoid cases occur in children under 5, and the new conjugate vaccine can be administered to children as young as 6 months old while providing longer-lasting immunity than previous vaccines. In 2017, Gavi funded one of the largest cholera vaccination campaigns in history to protect nearly a million people against the disease in camps and surrounding areas.
