Introducing Gavi’s new Interim CEO

David Marlow joined Gavi as Chief Operating Officer in July 2022. His primary focus was to enhance Gavi’s operational excellence, drive innovation and evolve Gavi`s culture within the organisation and across the Vaccine Alliance.

During his 30-year career, David has earned a reputation as a transformational global life sciences and social responsibility executive who has driven significant impact across multiple organisations.

A financial expert and chartered accountant who began his career in audit, David has a passion for people and cultures and has delivered significant business value through diversity and inclusion excellence and talent development.

Prior to joining Gavi, he served as Chief Operations Officer of the Mastercard Foundation, one of the largest private foundations in the world. This role provided him with the opportunity to leverage his extensive private sector experience with his personal ambition to give back to society. Among his accomplishments there, David led the redesign and implementation of a new operating model and played a key role in designing and implementing a US$ 1.5 billion, two-year "saving lives and livelihoods" programme to secure COVID-19 vaccines for the African continent.

Before joining Mastercard Foundation, David was a senior executive at the pharmaceutical company, Bristol Myers Squibb (BMS). In his last role there, as Senior Vice President and Company Transformation Lead, David led the design and implementation of a multiyear transformation programme and a new organisation-wide operating model. Prior executive roles include Senior Vice President, Finance Operations at BMS; Vice President, Finance at Mead Johnson Nutrition; and Global Divisional Controller at Philips Medical Systems.

He has strengthened operations and finance pipelines of talent, capabilities and culture by pioneering the design and implementation of people development and mentorship frameworks, diversity and inclusion, and culture programmes.
