Geneva, 11 December 2014 - Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance is pleased to announce that Gunilla Carlsson has been appointed to the Board where she will sit as an independent member.
Ms Carlsson played a crucial role in supporting the Gavi replenishment event in London in 2011 while she was Sweden’s Minister for International Development Cooperation. She joins the Gavi Board less than six weeks before the 2015 replenishment meeting, to be held in Berlin on 27th January.
Alongside her role on the Board, Ms Carlsson will join the Governance Committee, which assists the Board in fulfilling its responsibilities relating to developing and implementing sound governance policies and practices for Gavi.
“I am delighted to be joining the Gavi Board at such an important moment for the Alliance,” said Ms Carlsson. “Investing in immunisation through Gavi remains a sound choice for donor governments and I am looking forward to ensuring that we continue to deliver on our promises in the years to come.”
Ms Carlsson’s appointment was welcomed by Gavi Board Chair Dagfinn Høybråten.
“Gunilla Carlsson brings with her a wealth of expertise and insight at the highest levels of development and global health,” said Mr Høybråten. “We are looking forward to working with her to ensure Gavi maintains its track record for results, value for money and good governance.”
After working as an auditor, Ms Carlsson joined Sweden’s Moderate Party office in 1994. In 1995 she was elected to the European Parliament where served until 2002, when she was elected to the Riksdag for Stockholm. In 1999, she was elected vice chairman of the Moderate Party.
Ms Carlsson served as Minister for International Development Cooperation from 2006 until 2013.
