GAVI Board Chair meets with Bono and European Commissioner for Development on Brussels visit

Brussels, 10 October 2012 — GAVI Board chair, Dagfinn Høybråten has thanked Bono, co-founder of the anti-poverty advocacy group ONE, for supporting the Alliance’s life-saving mission.

“It was good to meet Bono, and be able to thank him in person for his genuine support and great advocacy for GAVI Alliance work to protect children’s lives with vaccines” said Dagfinn Høybråten, who met the rock star while visiting Brussels.

ONE as an advocacy organisation dedicated to the fight against extreme poverty and preventable diseases around the world has been highly engaged in supporting GAVI. Backed by two million members, ONE works with government leaders to support proven, cost-effective solutions like vaccines to save lives and help build sustainable futures.

The Board Chair also met with the European Commissioner for Development, Andris Piebalgs, both to discuss GAVI’s current collaboration with European institutions and explore opportunities for future collaboration under the upcoming EU financial framework (2014-2020).

“It was a good and fruitful meeting with the Commissioner Piebalgs” said Dagfinn.

Mr. Høybråten and Piebalgs recognised that GAVI’s business model, including its country-driven approach, co-financing policy and focus on sustainability, innovation & market-shaping, is closely aligned with the European Union development policy agenda for change.

The GAVI Board Chair’s visit to Brussels also included meetings with the ACP Secretariat, the Ambassadors of Benin and Kenya, Member of Parliament Eva Joly and Eleni Theocharous, French Ambassador Michele Boccoz and representatives of civil society.
